Have you ever woken up motivated in the morning to do something amazing, then given up once the day was over? Have you ever had a brilliant idea and yet gave up on the first bump that you encountered on the road?
Resilience is a crucial component of everyone’s success. Therefore, if you manage to get on your feet again and sort out how to get back into the game after suffering a huge flop, you have found the greatness formula.
For example, Thomas Edison completed 10,000 experiments that failed before inventing the lightbulb. But he was not scared to fail. After just one semester Steve Jobs dropped out of college. However, that didn’t deter him from establishing Apple, the technology giant.
In addition, I discovered this amazing starting speech that actor Denzel Washington presented at the University of Pennsylvania. Below is a little excerpt from what he said to the graduate students:
“If I’m going to fall, I don’t want to fall back on anything except my faith. I wanna fall forward. I figure at least this way, I’ll see what I’m going to hit. Fall forward!” Denzel Washington
“Most people allow their fear of failure, 80% allow their fear of failure drive away their desire to succeed. If you’re willing to fail again and again and again, If you make up your mind that nothing will stop you, if you make up your mind to become a no-matter-what person then that will then give birth to a part of yourself that you don’t know.”
What does this all mean?
Something that really made me wonder is the phrase that he likes to use a lot – FALL FORWARD. So, here is the truth. If you go to places, if you do things, if you stretch out your comfort zone, then failure is meant to happen. Therefore, taking the first step is something that happens to anyone who takes a risk. In other words, failing is simply an element of the deal.
The positive thing about this is that it is easy to fix a failure. Yet you cannot repair something that you haven’t done and encountered. You can’t change something that you’ve never tried. And if you don’t fail that means you don’t push yourself strong enough. So, you don’t aim for stars.
All the time you’re spending being scared and worried about how not to fail, you could be spending following your passion and embracing it. If someone is feeding you negative thoughts, don’t listen to them, let go of toxic people in your life. In the end, there’s only one way to do it TRIAL and ERROR.
Fall forward. Find out what you’re slipping on and accept your current condition. Above all, nothing is eternal, not even failure. Perspective means everything. Shift your perspective, and see things taking a new shape around you. Don’t get down on your safety net. It has a title on it – and that is your comfort zone.
But we cannot make comfort zones out of big ideas and dreams. And big dreams require courage. In conclusion, dreaming big means taking risks. Dreaming big means having no fear of failing big.
